Some Heroes Don’t Wear Capes: Adult Career Coaches in Action

When most people think of a hero, they picture someone in a cape, flying to save the day. But in Mississippi, some heroes work quietly behind the scenes—connecting people to opportunity, listening without judgment, and never giving up on those who need a second chance. One of those heroes is Angela Hayes, an Adult Career Coach at the Jackson WIN Job Center.

For students like Megan and Justin, Angela was more than a coach—she was a turning point.

Megan: Finding a Place in a Hands-On World

Megan was in between jobs when she walked into the WIN Job Center and saw a flyer for trade programs. Curious about a new direction, she signed up for the Electrical Trade Training, a Reconnect training at Build Mississippi – funded by a partnership with Accelerate MS and South Central MS Works. What she found was more than instruction—it was community.

“I didn’t even know this place existed,” Megan said. “But the quality, the hands-on learning—it just clicked. In four weeks, I could tell whether I had the aptitude for this work. And I do!”

As one of only two women in the class, Megan thrived. “It was fun competition. Not about being better than anyone else—just showing we all bring something valuable.”

She credits Angela for keeping the process moving: “Sometimes, when you call a number on a flyer, you may get someone who’s just going through the motions. Angela didn’t just go through the motions—she made me feel welcome and capable from the start.”

Justin: Rebuilding a Future, One Wire at a Time

For Justin, life had been full of tough breaks. A devoted father, he had bounced between jobs, managing day-to-day life. But everything changed when he met Angela and joined the electrical class.

“I told Angela, ‘Just put me on the list.’ And the rest is history,” he said.

Justin worked hard in class, learning from the instructor, wiring circuits, and building something tangible for the first time in years. The experience, he said, gave him a sense of purpose—and hope. “My kids call me their hero. And now, I want to live up to that.”

Angela’s role? Essential. “She never let the opportunity fall through. She followed up. She cared. And that gave me the push I needed to keep going.”

Angela : The Connector

Angela doesn’t seek the spotlight. But her dedication shines through every life she touches. Her approach combines streamlined digital intakes, meaningful conversations, and relentless follow-through. For Angela, it’s not about checking boxes—it’s about changing lives.

“I just try to do a good job in whatever I’m assigned to,” she says. “That doesn’t just mean hitting the numbers. I value quality—and seeing people grow.”

And grow they did.

Thanks to Angela’s support, both Megan and Justin not only completed the program but are continuing on to other opportunities. Justin plans to pursue more training, maybe even an apprenticeship. Megan is looking at carpentry next. Both are spreading the word—telling friends and neighbors to call “Miss Angie” and take the first step.

What Is an Adult Career Coach?

Adult Career Coaches are trained professionals who help Mississippians navigate their path to a better career. From identifying interests and goals to connecting individuals with training programs, support services, and job opportunities, they are a vital part of the workforce development system.

Career Coaches like Angela Hayes are based at WIN Job Centers throughout the metro area, offering free guidance and hands-on support to adults ready to take the next step toward a rewarding career. Whether it’s a first job, a career change, or re-entry into the workforce, Adult Career Coaches help turn uncertainty into opportunity.

The Impact

Angela’s story is a powerful reminder: career coaches aren’t just administrators—they are lifelines. They are mentors. And sometimes, they’re exactly the hero someone needs.

Because sometimes, the people who change lives the most don’t wear capes—they wear name tags, make calls, and believe in others until they believe in themselves.
