tlawton-scmw   |   April 14, 2025

When Chante Jefferson, Ryan Anderson, and Arqualon Wall walked into their local WIN Job Centers, each was unemployed and searching for a fresh start. Thanks to the support of caringCareer Coaches and a powerful network of workforce partners, all three are now on the road—literally and figuratively—toward promising careers in commercial driving.

Coaching That Makes a Difference

Each participant connected with a dedicated career coach who helped guide and coach them into the CDL-B training program at Holmes Community College’s Ridgeland Campus. Chante Jefferson worked with Vanessa Shiers at the Vicksburg WIN Job Center, Ryan Anderson was supported by Angela Hayes at the Jackson WIN Job Center, and Arqualon Wall received guidance from Amanda Reed at the Pearl WIN Job Center. These coaches offered more than just information—they provided personalized encouragement and accountability that helped each trainee take the first step toward building a new career. “They helped me every step of the way,” said Arqualon. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but they helped me figure it out.”“When I got the call saying I had a spot, it was the greatest news I ever got,” added Chante. “This program changed my life.”

ReSkill. ReLaunch. ReConnect.

The CDL-B training at Holmes Community College is part of the ReSkill. ReLaunch. Reconnect. initiative, designed to give unemployed and underemployed Mississippians fast access to meaningful training in eight weeks or less. With hands-on experience and a $10/hour stipend, participants “earn while they learn” and gain the real-world skills employers are actively hiring for. Held Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the training includes:

  • Classroom instruction on DOT regulations and safety protocols
  • Controlled driving environment and road driving exercises
  • Shifting techniques, vehicle inspections, cargo handling, and record keeping

Instructor Dwight Brown brings heart and skill to the program, blending technical know-how with mentorship. “We teach more than just driving,” said Mr. Brown. “We’re helping people start careers. That means patience, guidance, and preparation for the real world.” “He breaks everything down in away that makes sense,” said Chante. “He really cares about our success.”

Advice for Job Seekers: Start at the WIN Job Center

Each of these trainees has one piece of advice for others who may be unemployed or unsure about their future: visit your local WIN Job Center and ask about training programs.“ Go in and talk to someone,”Ryan encouraged. “There are people at the WIN Job Center who care and want to help you—not just treat you like a number.” A Model for Mississippi’s Workforce Future This program represents a powerful model for the future of workforce development in Mississippi—one built on collaboration, shared goals, and a commitment to real results. By aligning the strengths of training providers like Holmes Community College, funding and leadership from Accelerate Mississippi, federally supported WIN Job Centers, and the strategic implementation of Southcentral Mississippi Works(SCMW), this initiative demonstrates what’s possible when partners work together. It’s not just about training—it’s about creating clear pathways to employment and transforming lives.
